First Presbyterian Church of Clifton located on Main Street was erected around 1850. It is the only public building in Clifton to survive the Civil War. At various times during the war it was used as a hospital and misused as a horse stable by occupying Union Forces. The front of the church still bears the scars of where Union soldiers pulled out part of the brick wall to make a wider opening. It was placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1988.

General Nathan Bedford Forrest crossed the Tennessee River here in January 1863. In the days when the steamboat was king, Clifton was an important river port. Today it is a relaxing river town with a beautiful view of the river with an occasional barge passing by.
